HOW SAFE IS YOUR WORKPLACE?

The Hierarchy of controls are our guiding principles
When we look at the hierarchy of control, elimination of the hazard is the most effective control measure. Reducing the risk through substitution, isolation or engineering changes and administrative controls all offer higher protection than PPE. PPE is the least effective control measure, but at the same time it is the last line of defence when all other options are exhausted.
So what does that mean? It means that there is no one size fits all approach to PPE. Just because a certain glove was used on a previous project doesn’t mean it’s the BEST option for you today. Having a deep knowledge of all available products and not just a siloed view of product categories becomes critical. Interpreting your SWMS, understanding your risks and what you do should come before any safety recommendation.
But that’s often not the experience you receive from your traditional PPE supplier. Their approach of “Look at this product, this is how amazing it is, all the things it can do, why don’t you use it? Buy my product!” is fundamentally different to ours. How do they know it’s what you need? When the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
